Thursday Evening Northland Forecast: 8/21/2025
A Cooler Weekend On The Way
The days are getting shorter. The angle of incoming solar radiation (insolation) is getting lower in the sky. And, it’s getting a little cooler outside. Yeah, summer is winding down. We all knew it was going to happen. We just hoped the summer might last a little bit longer. Our high temp in Duluth today was 78 degrees, which is three degrees above average. Tomorrow’s high will be about 76. But after that, it’s down in the 60s for high temps, for the next several days. We probably won’t see a high in the 70s again until next Wednesday. Truly, it was inevitable. One positive, is that we haven’t had to talk about smoke from Canada for about two weeks. There’s the silver lining.
A cold front will move from west to east across Minnesota in the next 24 hours. Showers and thunderstorms will fire up along that front, this evening, overnight, and the first part of tomorrow morning. There may be some morning fog, for the third morning in a row, too. By Friday afternoon, it will be mostly sunny, with highs in the mid 70s. But, on the back side of that cold front, cooler, dense air will rush down from Canada (without the smoke, this time), and our highs this weekend will be 66 and 62. It will also be a very breezy weekend, with winds from the north and northwest, gusting to 25mph. So, you might want to have at least a light jacket or sweatshirt around, this weekend.
After our chance for rain overnight, I don’t see any precipitation in the forecast until at least late next week. We are down about 6 inches of rain for the year, so we sorely need some moisture. Koochiching, Itasca and northern St. Louis counties got some rain today, but so far, in the Twin Ports, we have been shut out today. I’m hopeful we get at least a little rain overnight tonight.
If you’re heading down to the Cities for the Minnesota State Fair, it will be great weather for the next week. So, that works out perfectly! Have a great Friday!
