Superior Welcomes Sister City Delegates and Students
SUPERIOR, Wis. — With it being an odd-numbered year, Superior is once again playing host to delegates from their sister city.
Ami-Machi (AH-MEE MAH-CHEE), OR “Ami Town” is a Japanese city of about 47 thousand people and has been Superior’s sister city for nearly 30 years, with delegates from one city visiting the other depending on the year. Superior delegates welcome their sister city’s representatives during odd-numbered years, and travel to Japan during even-numbered ones.
“(The) Sister City Exchange between Superior City and Ami-Town, which began in 1997, we (are) proud (of) each other’s understanding and friendship with each other, and the results are highly appreciated.” said Tomohiko Miyazaki, superintendent of Ami-Machi Schools.
The 17 travelers, including 11 school children, will get a full taste of Superior over the next couple of days.
“We’re going to go mini golfing, the kids are. We’re going to tour the Superior public, OUR historic properties, and we’re gonna go to the Korpela’s house and have some water time on the lake.” said Rebecca Baker, Mayor Jim Paine’s chief of staff and, according to him, the mastermind behind the trip.
As for the delegates, they will have to hurry to experience Superior before their own flights leave on Aug. 28.
