UWS Earns StormReady Designation Title

SUPERIOR, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin Superior has earned the title of StormReady designation by the National Weather Service.

StormReady is a program that help communities develop plans to handle all types of extreme weather.

Living in the snowy Northland, UWS has systems in place to notify students about severe weather warnings and forecasts.

Those systems, earning the college the StormReady designation.

To earn the designation, UWS established a 24-hour warning center, sends weather alerts, monitors local weather, promotes preparedness and has a formal hazardous weather response plan.

“When anything happens on campus they get notified, nine times out of 10 that’s when it’s 30 below and we got three feet of snow and classes are canceled. About 6 a.m. we send out alerts saying that there is no classes. So a lot of our procedures were kind of lined up with the storm ready designation,” Joe Eickman, UWS Chief of Police said.

UWS students are automatically enrolled to receive weather updates through SAFE Alert text messages.

Severe weather updates are also posted on the colleges social media and website.
