UPDATE: South Lake Ave reopened after chlorine spill causes Canal Park evacuations

2 P.M. UPDATE — Crews responded to The Suites Hotel, finding low levels of chlorine gas leading to the discovery of a chlorine spill in a pool utility room.

Officials say the spill has been cleaned and the building ventilated.

As of 1:00 P.M., evacuees were allowed to return. All roads that were closed are now open.

According to officials, there is no more threat to public health.

DULUTH, Minn — Multiple buildings are evacuated, and a portion of South Lake Avenue is closed after the smell of chlorine was detected at The Suites Hotel.

The Duluth Fire Department is on scene with a chemical assessment team to investigate.

Lake Avenue is closed between Buchanan and Railroad Streets, and people are asked to stay away from the area.
