ST. PAUL, Minn. — House Republicans released their proposed school safety agenda yesterday.

The proposal outlines how they plan to protect students in the classroom.

They intend to get more school resource officers in school and look at security systems in place and upgrading them as needed through the SHIELD Act.

“When you have security at schools, you have protection for these kids. You can have a reasonable assurance that you’re going to get some help when they’re there every day, when we actually pay for that security, it’s going to be a lot more meaningful.” said Rep. Cal Warwas, (R) Minnesota District 7B.

One of the provisions listed mentioned ‘repealing or amending restrictions on doctors’ ability to use their best medical judgment’.

When asked for clarification on what that meant, Representative Warwas said the following:

“Minnesota, in the last biennium, passed a law banning conversion therapy. So, they’re saying, well, you know, if someone, if someone, thinks they’re the opposite gender, you know you’re not going to coach them and say, Well, maybe you’re not.”

As explained, this provision would mean allowing therapists to counsel individuals considering being trans, against it.

The proposal also mentions funding more mental health care beds and establishing minimum sentences for repeat gun crimes.
