Tribal Flag Plaza inauguration held at Minnesota State Capitol
ST. PAUL, Minn. — A tribal flag-raising ceremony was held at the Minnesota State Capitol on September 5.
The Capitol Area Architectural and Planning Board, in partnership with Tribal Nations, the Governor’s Office, and the Minnesota Department of Administration, held the ceremony to honor the new Tribal Flag Plaza.
The plaza is located on the Dakota homeland and honors the sovereignty, history, and the ongoing presence of Minnesota Tribal Nations.
Some of the flags featured in the plaza include:
- Cansa’yapi / Lower Sioux Indian Community
- Gaa-waabaabiganikaag / White Earth Nation
- Gaa-zagaskwaajimekaag / Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe
- Gichi-Onigaming / Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa
- Mdewakanton / Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community
- Misi-zaaga’iganiing / Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe
- Miskwaagamiiwi-Zaagaiganing / Red Lake Nation
- Nah-gah-chi-wa-nong / Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa
- Pezihutazizi Oyate (Upper Sioux Community)
- Tinta Wita / Prairie Island Indian Community
- Zagaakwaandagowininiwag / Bois Forte Band of Chippewa
Funding for the new plaza came from the Minnesota State legislature in 2023 for Capitol Mall improvements.
