4:20 P.M.: Duluth’s ‘Legacy Cannabis’ Becomes State’s First Licensed Dispensary
DULUTH, Minn. — History was made in Duluth Tuesday when Legacy Cannabis expanded its operations to become the state’s first licensed dispensary of marijuana.
Legacy Cannabis is located in the heart of the Lincoln Park Craft District, and the line was out the door Tuesday afternoon for people wanting to buy cannabis.
The store was granted a license to sell pot from the Office of Cannabis Management earlier this summer. A ribbon-cutting was held Tuesday at the store, conveniently celebrating at 4:20 p.m.
Legacy Cannabis has sold different types of THC-infused products for some time now, like beverages and gummies, but not cannabis by itself.
“We’re going to be able to sell actual cannabis flowers, so that’s your traditional canvas,” said Legacy Cannabis Duluth’s Lead Consultant Josh Wilken-Simon. “Take it, put it in a grinder, break it up by hand, roll in a joint, put it in a nice, locally-made pipe and smoke it. Your traditional cannabis flower that has not been available in Minnesota, except for medical and the tribally-licensed dispensaries, that’s the new exciting thing.”
Tuesday’s opening is just one of a number of dispensaries that will be opening their doors around Minnesota.
“Myself and tons of other fellow activists worked tirelessly for years in Minnesota to be able to create a craft cannabis legalization law, and time will tell if our hard work paid off, but one good first inkling is today, by having a small, family-owned business like [Legacy], be able to open up their doors, then so many other folks that I know that are just on the verge of having their small dispensaries open,” said Wilken-Simon.
Recreational cannabis use was legalized in Minnesota in 2023, but it’s taken since then to get to the stage of purchasing physical plants.
