UMD Football Seeks Redemption Against MSU-Moorhead

UMD is 18-1 against MSU-Moorhead since the 2002 season.

DULUTH, Minn.- It was in a contest against Minnesota State-Moorhead last September that the UMD football team adopted their motto for this season.

The Bulldogs lost on a last second touchdown to the Dragons so the one play at a time method was born.

So far, that’s resulted in a perfect 4-0 record, including last week’s 34 to 17 victory over then ranked number 25 Sioux Falls.

Head Coach Curt Wiese says when looking at the film, this weekend’s matchup has the makings for another tight contest with the 3-1 Dragons.

“I think the last four years we’ve faced these guys it’s come down to the last play of the game or pretty close. Moorhead State is a good football team, one of the better quarterbacks in the country coming into Malosky this weekend that we have a ton of respect for. They’ve been very good defensively and they’ve challenged people. It’s a game this weekend where same thing, we’re going to need to hang onto the football, we’re going to need to be able to take shots over the top on offense and we’re going to need to score against Moorhead State,” said Wiese.

In last year’s matchup, UMD quarterback Kyle Walljasper threw for over 300 yards with 3 touchdown passes. He says this time around it’s all about the work leading up to the contest.

“It’s a similar team that we’re playing again. It’s just hopefully our gameplan is a little different, hopefully we’re a little more locked in. I mean this week we already have guys out here doing walk-throughs just preparing. I think it’s going to be a big thing, just preparation. These guys have thrown a lot of stuff at us, lot of junked up fronts defensively. That’s something we’re just looking to be more ready for this year,” added Walljasper.

All-time, the head-to-head between the two squads has been pretty lopsided since 2002 as UMD is 18 and 1 against Minnesota State-Moorhead.

They’ll look to make it 19 on Saturday at noon.
