Bookstore at Fitger’s Highlighting Banned Book Week
DULUTH, Minn.– The bookstore in Fitgers is showcasing novels that have been removed from schools, libraries, and other public spaces.
Decorated with caution tape and explanation bookmarks, the bookstore is highlighting the growing trend of banned books, which has been happening since 1982.
The bookstore manager told FOX 21 that last year alone 2,000 books joined the list.
They’re included for reasons such as mature content and talking animals.
Another goal for this display is to generate conversation and free speech, but also, for readers to be seen.
“That’s the power of books, people want to be able to see themselves in a book, whether it be because of LGBTQ issues or because of racial issues or because of poverty or any number of things. And we as people have the right to control what we read. We don’t have the right to control what other people read, and that’s just really important,” explained Jennifer Jubenville, store manager Bookstore at Fitgers.
You can check out what books are banned throughout the rest of the week, but to continue the conversation afterwards.
