Hibbing Celebrates Groundbreaking on New Public Safety Building

Ground Breaking PicHIBBING, Minn. — Hibbing celebrated the groundbreaking for their new Public Safety Building.

The new building will house the Police and Fire departments together under one roof.

This will increase communication between departments, reduce response times, and provide more space for training, equipment, and technology.

“Response time is a matter of seconds in life or death, and any time you can collaborate from the same facility, you’re in a much safer position as you move forward in response.” said Mayor Peter Hyduke of Hibbing, MN.

This project has been in the works for a while, and required coordination on the city, county and state levels.

“The collaboration and coordination of this is really nothing that I’ve ever seen in my career. The amount of work that had to be done on the backside was staggering. I mean, even when I started going to the different events and meetings that we had to plan this, it was absolutely amazing how much stuff there is in the finite details and how well coordinated and how well this process has moved along between the state, the county and the city.” said Erik Jankila, Fire Chief of Hibbing Fire Department.

The project is expected to finish fall 2026.

Funding for the project came from a local sales tax referendum voted on by Hibbing residents and business owners.
