Northern Star: UW-Superior Men’s & Women’s Soccer

Another year and another UMAC title for both the UWS men's & women's soccer teams.

SUPERIOR, Wis.-Another year and another UMAC title for both the UWS men’s & women’s soccer teams.

But at times this season, it didn’t look like that was a possibility.

The Yellowjacket men overcame a slow start amidst plenty of veteran changes on the roster.

“We knew that leadership was going to be great. It takes a minute for guys to turn and figure out who they’re looking at for that leadership. So, the early components of the season I think that’s what we saw, sort of that vaccum. As we’ve gotten that sorted out, I do think that this team has shown a good deal of resilience,” said men’s head coach Joe Mooney.

And over on the women’s side, they adjusted to a new head coach in Nick Piazza, who says it was the senior leaders that helped him in his first year.

“Unaccountable, I can’t put a figure on that. Like I said, I don’t think we’d be in this position without those players and their contributions,” said women’s head coach Nick Piazza.

Players that are hoping to keep the season going.

“I think we’re excited, it’s a new area. Personally, being a senior we’ve been at Loras for a few years now. Just being able to go somewhere new and be able to play another game of soccer. We just want to have one more game, one more game, especially as a senior,” added women’s defender Meagan Bergerson.

But also build on what they already accomplished in previous years.

“It seemed like such a big feat to win a national tournament game. But from last year, we saw how achievable that was. And that feeling runs throughout the squad, even with the young guys,” said men’s midfielder Isaac Becket.

The UWS men will take on St. Olaf on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

The Yellowjacket women will face UChicago also on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
