Hmong community preps for New Year celebrations

Hmong PrepsDULUTH, Minn. — Local Hmong community members and students are prepping for their celebration on Saturday Dec 6th.

This event is a huge opportunity to learn about and celebrate with the Hmong community and culture.

It’s been 50 years since many Hmong came to the US as refugees after the fall of Vietnam.

The Twin Cities boasts the second largest urban population of ethnic Hmong in the world.

“It’s so important to all of us especially being in Duluth, two hours away from the Twin Cities where a lot of our families are. So, to have this celebration and the space to celebrate our culture is really really important to us.” said Summer Yang, Vice President of UMD Hmong Club.

Doors open at 9 am for a social hour and performances and goes until 4pm.

Lunch will be from 12 to 1:30.

The menu includes sticky rice, chicken, fried rice and egg rolls.

It’s being held at First United Methodist Church, also known as the Coppertop.

Everyone is welcome and the event is free.
