Pete Stauber expresses concerns over newly proposed Canadian border crossing rules

Rep. Pete Stauber (R) Minnesota's 8th Congressional DistrictDULUTH, Min. – Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08), Senator Kevin Cramer (ND), and Congressman Jack Bergman (MI-01) on Friday, December 19, 2026 sent a letter to the Canadian government inquiring about new border crossing rules that were just announced.

Canada Border Services Agency announced that the Remote Area Border Crossing (RABC) program will end on September 14, 2026.

Rep. Stauber said in statement, “While I am disappointed that Canada has suspended a program that Americans and Canadians in border communities rely on, I am hopeful that its new remote access program will address the needs of these unique economies…. I look forward to working with the Canadian government to ensure the security of our shared border while creating an environment for small businesses along the border to thrive.”

The letter was addressed to the Ambassador of Canada to the United States, the Canada Border Services Agency President and Canada’s Minister of Public Safety.

The letter asks six questions.

1. What process will be followed to ensure the needs of relevant stakeholders, communities, and permit holders are addressed during and after this transition?
2. What procedures must current permit holders follow to access remote areas in Canada during this transition?
a. Once the transition is complete, how will border communities access remote areas in Canada?
3. Will the new remote access program involve an application process similar to the RABC program?
4. Will the Canadian government, in any way, limit the access of these communities during and after this transition?
5. How will the new remote access program prioritize the security of our shared border?
6. Will you commit to visiting the communities we represent to engage with our constituents and answer their many questions?
