Superior Fire Department shares important cold weather tips

SUPERIOR, Wis.– With the cold weather bringing unexpected issues with heating the Superior Fire Department is reminding the community of some important tips.

A Battalion Chief with Superior Fire said they see a significant increase with house fires December through march.

This is largely related to improper heating techniques, such as poorly ventilated appliances.

They said to keep space heaters three feet away from any combustibles.

It’s also important to avoid extension cords, as they tend to become easily overwhelmed.

The chief said, when you do brave the outdoor temps, it’s important to keep yourself safe as well.

“People who like to enjoy the outdoors is preparing for the weather. Dress in layers limited exposure and the subzero temperatures. And if you’re traveling, make sure that you have a safety kit in your vehicle that has some blanket blankets, maybe some hand warmers,” said Steve Miner, Battalion Chief, Superior Fire Department.

And when it comes to having gas appliances Miner said, there’s a deadly, invisible culprit that leads to a lot of calls.

“We don’t want to heat our spaces with gas fired appliances such as a gas oven; those are the main culprits that are going to create carbon monoxide in there. Also maintaining the vents on the exterior of the house, making sure that your hot water heater vents, your furnace vents are clear,” said Miner.

Miner recommends getting your carbon monoxide, and chimneys professionally checked out at least once annually.
