Man stabs co-worker “because he felt like hurting someone”: Deputies

GRAND MARAIS, Min. – A man is accused of stabbing and trying to kill his co-worker at the Cook County Co-op.

Charging documents say Donovan Michael Vondall stabbed the co-worker “because he felt like hurting someone.”

Vondell allegedly told Cook County Sheriff’s Deputies he thought his co-worker was friendly but the look on the co-worker’s face that day led to Vondall do the stabbing.  The stabbing happened at around 3:30pm on Saturday, December 27, 2025

Charging documents say Vondell claimed mental health issues, had not been sleeping well, and he “might have been from drinking vodka and White Claw.”

Vondell allegedly stabbed the co-worker while working in a refrigerator and the chased the co-worker through the store while trying to stab the co-worker additional times.

After the stabbing Vondell left the workplace and went to his brother’s home.  Vondell was arrested at his brother’s home without incident.

The criminal complaint said victim suffered stabbing injuries.

Vondell is scheduled to be in court on January 2, 2026.

He is charged with one felony count of attempted murder in the second degree, one felony count of first degree assault (great bodily harm), and one count of felony assault with a deadly weapon (substantial bodily harm).
