The Twin Ports sing Sea Shanties

DULUTH, Minn. — People gathered at the Duluth Folk School to learn and sing sea shanties.

Historically, sea shanties served as working songs, sung by sailors as they traveled across the sea. Throughout the event, multiple Shantymen and a few opera singers took turns leading a variety of tunes. Many people joined in whether they were beginners or experts, to help bring the music to life.

I fell in love with sea shanties when I was about 10, and so I’ve been picking them up over the years, and I love to share them with people,” said Paul Webster, Shantyman. “So it’s it’s a lot of fun, and to hear a bunch of people singing them and just putting some oomph behind them is just wonderful.”

For those who couldn’t attend the event, the next sea shanty singing session will take place on Sunday, Jan. 18.
