Duluth and Superior YMCA locations integrate as Lake Superior YMCA

SUPERIOR, Wis. — Two YMCA branches in the Twin Ports are now operating under one name.

A ribbon cutting was held on Monday to celebrate the integration of the Duluth Area Family YMCA and the Superior Douglas County Family YMCA.

As the Superior location joins the Duluth location and its branches, the two organizations will operate under a new name, Lake Superior YMCA.

Ahead of the official rebrand, the Superior location saw upgrades to its lobby. Both locations will remain and operate out of their current buildings under the new title.

“Folks can expect to come to the same buildings they’ve always loved and to see the staff that they know and care about, and we look forward to enhanced services for all of our members and all community members,” Sara Cole, Lake Superior YMCA President and CEO said.

With the Duluth Area YMCA already having branches in Hermantown and Cook County, and the addition of the Superior branch, its the second largest YMCA service area in the country.

“I think it’s going to benefit our community as a whole, by this larger organization, combined organization, being able to offer more more services for our members. What’s important is to really keep the tradition of the superior YMCA, the history of the superior YMCA alive,” Steve Glonchak. Superior YMCA Board Chair.

While YMCA’s have nationwide service, with members have access to any YMCA, the merge will allow a smoother process of visiting YMCA’s in the Northland.
