Influenza rates at highest level in 25 Years, CDC says

DULUTH, Minn. — Influenza cases are climbing across the region, putting added strain on health systems like Essentia Health as more patients seek care.

Christie Erickson, a nurse practitioner at Essentia Health in Hermantown, says flu activity continues to rise — and she doesn’t expect relief anytime soon.

“What’s unique is this is happening later in the season and at a more significant level than we’ve seen in the past,” Erickson said. “The CDC says these are the highest influenza rates in 25 years.”

Erickson adds that using the right level of care — including virtual visits when appropriate — can help patients recover at home while keeping emergency rooms open for true emergencies.

Health officials continue to recommend flu vaccination for everyone six months and older.
