DULUTH, Min. – Secondary Schools in the Duluth School District took a moment of silence at 10am on January 9, 2026.

It was part of Governor Tim Walz declaring it to be a “Day of Unity”.

In the announcement Governor Walz, “encouraged individuals, businesses, faith institutions, and organizations to observe a moment of silence at 10:00 am, and use the day to connect in your community and engage in acts of service.”

The staff at the school district allowed parents to take the their students out of school if they did not want to partake in the moment of silence.

Below is the script that was read on the public address systems in the Middle and High Schools.

Good morning, [School name]. Today the state of Minnesota is recognizing a Day of Unity with a moment of silence.

It is natural to feel uneasy during difficult times, but remember that you are not alone. Our strength lies in how we support one another through empathy and kindness. Every student deserves to feel safe, and our staff is here for you.

During this time, it is our shared responsibility to come together through kindness, service and community. Please pause for a moment of silence as we join the rest of Minnesota for the Day of Unity and reflect on how you can help a neighbor or simply show extra kindness to a classmate, staff, or family.

[PAUSE FOR ONE MINUTE]

Thank you.
