Denfeld High School students peacefully protest against ICE escalations

DULUTH, Minn.– Earlier this morning at Denfeld High School, a large crowd of students gathered to make their voices heard as they peacefully protested against ICE.

The walk out gathering was filled with chants, and signs to express their feelings surrounding ice escalations in the state.

Duluth Public School officials told FOX 21, the kids were practicing their first amendment rights.

Denfeld High School has a noninterference policy; however, they also said they’re prepared to keep their kids safe.

That being said, administrative staff said they’re impressed with the level of effort the students put in.

“It’s great to see that our students are engaged in just what’s happening around in the world. It shows that they’re educated very well, and that they’re informed on can make their own decisions and opinions very well,” said Adelle Wellens, Communications Officer, Duluth Public Schools.

The leader behind today’s protest, Cesi Giron, said this gathering hit home.

Giron is a second-generation immigrant from El Savador, and she said, there’s mixed feelings with this protest.

“I feel a lot safer after seeing this, at least within my school. I know there’s going to be a lot of people who have a problem with it, or think it’s stupid, but what matters is that it speaks to me, and if it doesn’t speak to you, then that’s okay. But if like if what is happening isn’t like making you mad, I think that there is privilege that you need to find,” said Giron.

The Duluth Public Schools communications director said, if ICE does show up to any of their schools, they have a protocol in place.

Which includes taking down identification and legally requesting a warrant, as well as informing the parents and staff.
