House fire in Gogebic County leaves 1 dead

WAKEFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A house fire in Gogebic County left one person dead.

According to officials at 5:26 a.m. Tuesday, the crew responded to reports of a house fire in Wakefield Township.

Upon arrival, they found one person outside who said someone else was still in the home.

Officials say attempts were then made to rescue the other person, but were unsuccessful due to heavy smoke and flame.

Firefighters then equipped Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and were able to reenter and find the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
