Duluth Human Rights Commission holds ‘ICE OUT’ press conference

Duluth Human Rights Comission Press Conference

DULUTH, Minn. — The Duluth Human Rights Commission held a press conference at the city hall during an ‘ICE OUT’ sit-in that took place Friday.

Members of the commission spoke before people gathered for the sit-in, calling attention towards the ongoing presence of ICE agents in Minnesota.

The press conference focused on letting protesters know they are supported in their fight against ICE’s actions.

Local organizations and advocacy groups were invited to increase the presence and make their voices heard.

“We as the Human Rights Commission want to do the right thing and speak up accordingly, and we ourselves fear that same anxiety and fear that everybody else is feeling. It is a battle to wake up not knowing if you’re going to be able to make it to work. It is a battle to wake up and not knowing if you’re going to be able to make it to the grocery store for fear of being detained, nobody should have to live in fear,” Luis Islas, City of Duluth Human Rights Commissioner said.

Islas said the goal of the commission is to look after the community and make sure human rights violations are taken seriously, as well as educating people on issues of discrimination and diversity.
