DEED awards nearly $2.5 million in grants for Northland contamination cleanup

DULUTH, Minn. —  The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development(DEED) has awarded multiple Northern Minnesota communities nearly $2.5 million dollars in grants to clean up contaminated sites for redevelopment.

These grants pay up to 75% of the costs to assess and clean up the sites.

Communities in Northern Minnesota that received funds:

  • The Duluth Economic Development Authority was awarded $2,134,320 to clean up Lot D.
  • The City of Ely was awarded $257,817 in cleanup funding to clean up the Ely Depot and Railyard revitalization. 
  • The City of Hermantown was awarded  $50,482 in cleanup funding for Fox Ridge at the Pillars 

The funds are a part of a total of $6 million awarded to 13 communities across the state.

Officials say the grants are expected to create 147 jobs, clean up 75 acres of land, and create 1,509 housing units across the state.
