Northern Star: Carter Brown

Brown is currently in the top 10 for scorers in the state.

DULUTH, Minn.- Duluth Denfeld forward Carter Brown has made quite the leap from his sophomore season to his junior season.

He’s currently averaging 28 points per game, which is 15 points higher than his average the year prior.

“I feel like my team trusts me with the ball. I know I can shoot the ball so whenever I get it, I look to score. If I can’t score, I pass. I put in a lot of work this off-season, last off-season to be where I’m at now and I feel it’s all paying off,” said Brown.

The workouts weren’t the only thing that propelled him, it also involved a talk with his leader on the bench.

“I remember this summer, me and him sat down and had a conversation and the conversation consisted of he was asking a lot of questions about MarNaries. Trying to figure out how can I get to be a player like that. I explained to him how hungry MarNaries was. I said he was a gym rat, always in the gym. He said coach I want to be that, I want to do whatever it takes so I can be the best that I can be. I feel like coming into this year, that’s exactly what he has done,” said head coach Phill Homere.

MarNaries Ferguson just wrapped up his Hunter career, finishing as the all-time scoring leader in a Denfeld uniform. Brown may model Ferguson’s game but they have differences too.

“My versatility. I feel like I’m a three level scorer so it’s hard to guard me. I can get a bucket down low or I can give you a bucket at the top,” said Brown.

But like all things there are still areas to grow.

“I feel like he’s still trying to step into that role. He’s definitely understanding like what it takes as far as to lead for us and lead by example. I think that’s something he’s really starting to understand and guys are starting to look at him and be like oh okay I see if our leader is doing it, I know I’m willing to do it as well,” added Homere.

Brown and the Hunters will next host Grand Rapids on Thursday night.
