Superior Police Dept. releases videos of Dec. officer-involved shootout

SUPERIOR, Wis.– On December 7th, 2025, an officer-involved shooting took place on 37th Street, and Tower Avenue in Superior.

“I want to begin by acknowledging the gravity of any officer involved shooting. These events are traumatic,” said Chief Paul Winterscheidt, of the Superior Police Department.

Chief Winterscheidt said the city of Superior hasn’t seen an incident of this significance in decades.

“They raise legitimate concerns, and they demand a response that is careful, fact based and worthy of trust,” said Winterscheidt.

Thursday morning, SPD released body cam, dash cam, and surveillance footage of the events that unfolded late that night.

It shows a 911 call that escalated to the suspect, Dylan Wallace, shooting at two officers on scene, according to police.

“I considered all of the weight of the public interest in knowing what happened. This involved one of our schools. This involved a very busy intersection,” Winterscheidt said.

The footage centers around “Officer 1” and “Officer 2.” They are both unnamed in the footage because of Marsy’s Law. The law protects the identity of the affected officers, as they are considered crime victims.

“Officer 1” was shot three times by Wallace, using an AK-47 assault rifle, her radio was also damaged in the crossfire.

Meanwhile, Officer Ben Olson was focused on the whereabouts of Wallace. The video proceeds to show Wallace ramming a white van into the Superior Middle School numerous times.  He eventually landing himself, armed, in a classroom. Wallace surrendered himself four hours later.

After the release of the footage, Chief Winterscheidt said he is proud of how his team handled the serious situation.

“These officers are young officers, I think the most experienced officer in less than four years, Ben Olson has less than two years on the job,” noted Winterscheidt.

Winterscheidt said his department has mental health resources to manage this difficult healing period for officers involved.
