Zenith Bookstore sees increased sales in the dystopian genre

DULUTH, Minn. — A local bookstore has seen an uptick in sales for one particular genre.

As many Minnesotans express uncertainties about the state’s future, many readers are gravitating toward dystopian novels. Zenith Bookstore in Duluth has noticed the trend, spanning everything from the classics to new releases.

Store manager, Sarah Brown said, “history repeats itself, and what these books are trying to do is say, hey, look, this is what happens when maybe you try to make everyone dress the same, or everyone act the same, or you take away books and creativity out of society, this is what happens.”

Brown says readers are choosing dystopian books for several reasons. Some find them relatable, while others seek lessons from how characters navigate adversity.

“I think people are remembering books that they read when they were younger, that seemed to be sort of coming true, but they’re also looking to these books for, how do we resist? How do the characters in these books fight against these oppressive regimes?” Brown added.

The store has many recommendations, but one standout book is “The Vigil” by George Saunders. A thought-provoking fictional novel about a CEO who is visited by a spirit.

“We try to carry a little bit for everything you come in, tell us one book that you liked, and we’ll recommend another one that’s similar. Or if you say you didn’t like this book, well, we’ll find something different. But basically, as long as you’re reading, we’re happy,” said Brown.
