Explosion at Hermantown housing complex kills 2 residents
HERMANTOWN, Minn. — Two people were killed Saturday in Hermantown after an explosion rocked a multi-unit housing complex.
The explosion was reported around 6:20 p.m. Jan. 31 at the complex known as Green Acres at 5064 Jennifer Circle.
Multiple area departments were immediately called in to assist the Hermantown Fire Department, including Duluth, Proctor and the 148th Air Guard Fire Department.
The flames were contained to the single six-unit building where the explosion happened, but nearby buildings suffered damage from the blast, according to news release from the city of Hermantown.
The two residents who died were identified Sunday as Gayle Nelson, 89, and Joan Wisneski, 88.
No additional injuries were reported.
The cause of the blast is under investigation by the Minnesota State Fire Marshal.
The majority of the residents who were evacuated from Green Acres were allowed to return around midnight.
The St. Louis County Emergency Management the Red Cross provided critical aid and arranged housing options for residents not able to return to the homes.
