DULUTH, Minn. — The Duluth Public Schools is suing the Department of Homeland Security over immigration operations.

In a letter sent to parents on Wednesday, the district said it had filed the lawsuit.

Superintendent John Magas says they are taking this action in partnership with the teachers union, Education Minnesota, to make schools safe places for all children to learn and grow.

The lawsuit asks a federal court to issue an injunction.

Officials say this would stop federal immigration agents from coming onto school property, school buses, or within 1,000 feet of schools.

We are taking this action because it is the right thing to do, and our community and families are feeling impacted by activity across the state. We are standing in solidarity with those districts and with students across Minnesota and the entire country who deserve to feel safe at school. If we have the ability to fight for this protection, we have an obligation to do so for all children,” said Magas.
