Northern Pines Sled Dog Race returns for 7th Year in Iron River, Wisconsin

Iron River Sled Dog Race

IRON RIVER, Wis. — The 7th annual Northern Pines Sled Dog Race will take place February 7, and the best teams from across the Midwest are the main event.

50 mushers will compete across four races, ranging from a short 4 mile to a 32 mile.

The event is free for spectators to come and cheer on the mushers and of course the dogs.

Apart from the races, there’s a weight pull for dogs, a kids race called a mutt run and the chance to hop in a sled pulled by professional dogs.

Some of the competing dogs have participated in world renowned races, and are bringing top class talent.

“These dogs come from all over the world, and to have them come here to Iron River, Wisconsin and be so close to home, and just kind of support the community people coming from all over the place to this race. It’s such an amazing event,” musher Morgan Martens said.

After a lack of snow the last few years, the course is ready for a day of racing.

“For once, we’re not biting our nails wondering, are we going to have a race? Aren’t we going to have a race? We’ve have the our trail boss says it’s the second best trail in the race history, I think it’s the best. Two feet of snow on the ground around the trails., gives a good guideline for the teams to follow,” Race Marshall Rob Lombard said.

The races will kick off at 8:45 a.m. at Northern Pines Golf Course, the last race will start at 2:15 p.m.
