Knowing Your Neighbor: Harry Welty
DULUTH, Minn. — Harry Welty has lived in Duluth for over 50 years, spending time on the school board, but he’s better known for his snow sculptures outside his house.
Welty’s work can be seen, driving up 21st Ave. He’s been making snow sculptures for 38 years.
Welty said that his mother was an artist and wanted him to be an artist as well.
People remember his political pieces the most, particularly the President Trump-inspired sculptures.
“This particular 2nd term of the trump presidency, it’s all about vengeance. Well, I had my own mercurial sense of vengeance as well. And it was a fresh snowfall, and it was a brand new year, and I thought baby new year always starts the year. I just gave mine gold hair,” said Welty
His current sculpture is in honor of Renee Good, who was fatally shot in Minneapolis by an ICE agent.
Welty says what happened was crude and hurtful, and he wanted to express his feelings for a young mother losing her life.
Although some people are annoyed at some of his pieces, he is confident that people will forgive him and like his next sculpture.
