Fatal deputy-involved shooting in Duluth released

DULUTH, Minn. – Body and dashcam videos were released Tuesday showing the moments that lead up to a fatal deputy-involved shooting in Duluth Feb. 10 that killed 30-year-old Donald Felver III.

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy spotted Felver driving erratically near the intersection of Grand Avenue and Central Entrance.

The pursuit ultimately ended in the 7900 block of Grand Avenue.

A deputy performed a pit maneuver.

Two deputies then approached the vehicle while shouting verbal commands, according to the BCA.

Authorities say two shots were fired by Felver who was still in the driver’s seat, followed by gunfire by the two deputies on scene.

Felver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deputies, Joshua Bernt and Matthew Sobczak, have a combined 35 years of law enforcement experience.

The deputies were not hit by gunfire.

Sheriff Gordon Ramsay and Duluth Police Chief Mike Ceynowa said Felver is believed to be responsible for shooting and killing Darius Handy, 33, of Duluth earlier the same day on Piedmont Avenue.  They said the two are known to police and knew each other.

Both incidents remained under investigation Tuesday.
