Duluth Polar Plunge to return for 25th year

Polar Plunge Still

DULUTH, Minn. — It’s that time of the year, on Saturday, Feb 21, people will be freezing for a reason for the 25th annual Duluth Polar Plunge.

Each year the Duluth Police Department partners with Special Olympics Minnesota to host the biggest fundraiser for Special Olympic athletes.

Over its 25 year history, the Duluth plunge has raised over $3 million.

Right now more than 450 participants are signed up to take the chilly dip into the water.

The St. Louis County Rescue Squad is always suited up in the water to help plungers.

Many participants make the event an annual tradition and come back year after year.

“It’s really fun time. people come out, they’ve done it for years. maybe they’re first timer they’re a little nervous, after they do it they want to come back over and over again. people wear costumes. it’s just a really good time, and good get together in the middle of winter,” Jeremy O’Connor, Duluth Police Officer said.

The plunge is expected to start at 2 p.m. at the end of Park Point.

There’s a new location for the check-in, taking place at 310 Pub.

Registration is still open if you’re willing to brave the icy water.
