Grand Rapids Boys Hockey Celebrates 18th Trip to State Tournament
On Thursday, the Thunderhawks took down Rock Ridge, 4 to 1 to claim the Section 7AA title.
GRAND RAPIDS, Minn.- For the 2nd time in three seasons and the 18th time in school history, the Grand Rapids boys hockey team is heading to the state tournament in St. Paul.
On Thursday, the Thunderhawks took down Rock Ridge, 4 to 1 to claim the Section 7AA title.
Seth Carlson scored the eventual game-winner in the 2nd period and his teammate Dylan Clayton chipped in with two more goals in the 3rd to ice the game.
Afterwards, head coach Grant Clafton gave credit to the veterans on the team for helping them get back to the tourney.
“They had a lot of these guys in 10th grade that were on that 24′ team. They’ve had the experience where they’ve been in this spot before. Lot of character, real close knit group. I just think it’s sticking together and being selfless,” said Clafton.
“Oh it’s awesome. It’s what I’ve dreamed of since I was a little kid to go to the state tournament. I’ve watched it. I mean I watched 2017 when we won. It’s amazing,” said forward Dylan Clayton.
The Thunderhawks will look for their first state title win since 2017.
