LUTSEN, Minn. – A federal judge has stopped a federal lawsuit over insurance payouts for the Lutsen Lodge Fire until a state criminal case is done.

In January 2026, North Shore Resort Company, the company that owns Lutsen Lodge, sued Owners Insurance Company.

Owners Insurance Company would not pay the insurance claims from the fire that destroyed the historic resort.  The owner of the Lutsen Lodge, Bryce Campbell, is facing four charges related to his alleged arson of the lodge.  One of those charges is Insurance Fraud.

The judge wrote in his March 2, 2026, filing that Owners Insurance Company will be able to use “data obtained by the State Fire Marshal, Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and Minnesota Commerce Fraud Bureau” in the case.

The amount of money sought in the lawsuit is not clear.  But the criminal indictment against Campbell says, “On May 22, 2023, [Campbell] increased the insurance policy for Lutsen from $11,000,000 to $13,000,000.”
