Friends Of Animals Still in Need of Funding
$300,000 Required to Operate Cloquet Shelter

The Friends of Animals Humane Society was close to shutting down as recently as last fall.
Grants and one time donations have been sufficient to keep the doors open, and even provide a slight operating cushion, but the organization is still concerned about its future.
The shelter is close to over-population.
Friends of Animals is currently housing more than 120 animals.
A new or larger facility is needed and the organization already requires around $300,000 a year to function.
A majority of that money is used to pay wages and benefits for the employees who care for the sheltered animals.
Those employees also provide animal control services in Carlton County.
The shelter is contracted with the City of Cloquet, but does not receive re-reimbursement for providing services in other parts of Carlton County.
Shelter Director Cindy Haglin says her organization has to provide the services, because they are in the business of animal welfare and there’s no one else to do it.
Haglin hopes that Carlton County will eventually find a way to reimburse her organization.
For now the shelter will continue to rely on private donations and fundraising events such as the Mutt Strut in September and the Beastie Bash in November.
