Every year thousands of people descend on Canal Park to celebrate Grandma’s Marathon.

After the Marathon, the real celebration begins.

Runners and spectators alike celebrate with alcoholic beverages from tents and bars and leave empty bottles, cans and cups in their wake.

This year marathon staffers were prepared and brought in reinforcements for the cleanup.

Marathon Finish Line Coordinator Erik Nelson said the Denfeld Girls Soccer Team showed up to help with cleanup efforts at 7 a.m. Sunday.

Nelson compared the girls to a swarm of locusts, saying they had the entire area cleared of bottles and cups in about an hour.

Nelson expects the cleanup efforts to be completed–with the big top and all other remnants of the marathon cleared–by Tuesday.
