Orange cones and flashing lights are filling the streets as the busy construction season is underway in the Northland.
That has St. Louis County officials making work zone safety more important than ever.
Even when slower speed limits are posted they advise drivers pay attention, put down the phone and be cautious of flaggers.
“Don’t drive when you’re distracted. Put down your cellphone. Be alert and expect the unexpected. The traffic signs are there for a reason. So, follow the message of the sign and listen to the signs,” said traffic engineer for St. Louis County, Victor Lund.
A majority of the victims of work zone crashes are the drivers and passengers.
“We aren’t seeing a major increase or decrease in work zone crashes. But, it’s holding steady and we really want to push that trend line break and make it head towards zero crashes ultimately,” said Lund.
In the last 5 years, there have been 113 crashes in St. Louis County.
