It was a packed house at Amazing Grace Sunday afternoon as people gathered for the 19th annual Battle of the Jug Bands.
Event organizer Elliot Silverman said jug band music carried a special spirit and simplicity about it.
In order to be considered a jug band it must have three unique instruments.
“Wash tub bass, wash boards, kazoo, spoons and pretty much whatever you can invent can be a part of it,” said Silverman.
For musicians taking the stage it’s a special and unique experience.
“It’s sort of one of the forgotten forms of music. It died out in the 30’s so in a way it is very familiar, but in another way really bizarre and different – and unique and interesting,” said musician Tom Phelan.
The winner of the competition took home the coveted Krumkake Iron, a Norwegian waffle iron used by jug bands as a clacker.
