The Duluth School Board voted to approve a boys and girls lacrosse program made up of players from Duluth East and Denfeld high schools.
Those teams will compete in the Minnesota State High School League starting next spring.
So what does that mean for the future of the Duluth Chargers club program?
Well, the youth teams will continue and a varsity team may play in the Minnesota Boys Scholastic Lacrosse Association. But for Chargers from East and Denfeld, a lot of big changes are coming.
Duluth East junior Jack Norlen is one of many Chargers players that can’t wait to get started.
“I’m extremely excited,” said Duluth East Junior Jack Norlen. “Words can’t describe how excited I am. I’m excited for the growth of lacrosse in Duluth and how far we’ve come as a team and program.”
“Competition-wise, in combination with school support, fields, being able to get in to gyms, on to turf,” said Chargers Varsity Coach Scott Wishart. “We’ve been really lucky and fortunate to have those fields, but being able to have more access to them on a regular basis is going to be really helpful for our program.”
Hermantown is also looking to start a varsity lacrosse program, if the school can find suitable co–op partners.
Grand rapids, which currently plays in the MBSLA, is also considering the move.
