In honor of national Boating Safety Week local efforts were underway to prevent drownings in Lake Superior.

The Lake Superior Maritime Museum Visitor Center along with boating professionals encouraged people to wear life jackets and practice water and boating safety through demonstrations, classes and games.

“Last year of the 14 deaths that were recorded in Minnesota, the drownings of those people were not wearing life jackets,” said Mary George with Lake Superior Maritime Museum Visitor Center. “So we hope that this is going to help save lives.”

Festivities also included trying to break the Guinness World record of wearing 6,973 life jackets worn in one day.
