The American Lung Association reports lung cancer kills more women in the country than any other type of cancer.

This week, the City of Duluth is supporting Lung Health Week by turning Enger Tower turquoise in an effort to defeat the number one cancer killer in women.

Doctors say this cancer can be avoided.

“If you look at the number one way you can modify what you do to improve your health, the answer is to stop smoking.  Not weight loss, not alcohol, it’s always stop smoking.  So, that’s crucial,” said St. Luke’s Cancer Center Director, Dr. Basem Goueli.

Goueli also says it’s important to keep up on lung cancer screening.

“So, if you have a history of smoking for 30 years and you’re a current smoker or you quit smoking within the last 15 years anywhere between the age of 55 and 77 you can now go and get a low dose CT to screen for lung cancer.”

Two hundred twenty thousand people will be diagnosed with lung cancer in 2015 and 105,000 of those are women.
