Students Learn about the Harbor

It was a wet and soggy day for area sixth graders to learn about the St. Louis River Estuary.

It’s the 23rd year River Quest has hosted the hands-on educational program aimed at helping youth learn about the industrial, recreational and environmental aspects of the harbor.

“You’ll hear some squeals maybe today the hypothermia station is on this level as they’re sticking their arms in the ice water. They get to learn about ballast water and safety first, in terms of wearing their life jackets. They’ll (learn about the) cargos that move through here, how to clean up oil spills,” said Adele Yorde with the Duluth Seaway Port Authority.

1,500 students from 15 schools will part in the 4-day event at the DECC and aboard the Vista Star.
