Cloquet Man Charged With Three Counts Of Second Degree Murder Appears In Court

He faces up to 40 years in prison for each charge.

CLOQUET, Minn. – Sheldon James Thompson appeared in court for the first time for his bail hearing,
held on Tuesday in Carlton County, on three charges of second-degree murder.

Sheldon Thompson showed little to no emotion or remorse while in the courtroom even after the judge set his bail at $1 million.

During the bail hearing, which lasted no more than 10 minutes, Sheldon Thompson’s current representation requested for him to be released before trial.

Carlton County Attorney Lauri Ketola argued against that request by sharing with the courtroom his lengthy criminal record.

The 33-year-old has several convictions dating back to 2005 including domestic violence and assault.

He’s also been convicted of violating a no-contact order against him that required him to stay away from a domestic violence victim he was convicted of causing bodily harm to.

Carlton County Judge Rebekka Stumme agreed that Thompson’s long list of convictions make him a flight risk.

She ruled a pretrial release would not be an appropriate action for this case.

This means Thompson is remaining in custody with bail set at $1 million without the option to post ten percent in order to be released.

Thompson will be back in the courtroom on Monday for a Rule 8 hearing, which is used to advise defendants of their rights.

At that time, Thompson will be given a public defender to represent his case.

He faces up to 40 years in prison for each charge.
