Locals were invited to Myers–Wilkins Elementary Wednesday for a free lead–level testing to raise awareness about the dangers.

Officials say high lead levels are a concern in women who are pregnant, and can affect physical and mental development in young children.

“Younger children are more susceptible to the lead, they’re crawling around, putting things in their mouth, but also lead paint on windowsills and things like that could easily get into a child,” explained Rachel Loeffler-Kemp with the American Lung Association.

Lead can be found in paint, water and household items like ceramics, jewelry and toys.
