A young entrepreneur has taken the reigns in reopening the famous Gary Milk House in Duluth.

Twenty year old, Derek Medved, worked there when he was 13 and had always dreamed of owning it.

Friday, April 24th, his dream came true.

He says he could not have done it without the support of the community.

Medved stepped up and according to his motto “made it happen.”

“There’s nobody that’s going to make it happen other than you.  Nobody’s going to go reach your dreams.  So, I took it into consideration and I said, “Let’s make it happen” and I brought some great people back.  I could not have done it with my friends, family and community,” Medved said.

Not having the store left a noticeable hole in the community.

By bringing back the past, the community came flocking through the doors and was very emotional.

“I’ve had a few people cry.  I’ll hold my own for a little bit but there’s been points where it’s been overwhelming and very exciting but a lot of people thank me.  The biggest thing is they shouldn’t be thanking me, I should be thanking them.”

The grand opening fell on Medved’s birthday!

The convenience store close last August and was previously owned by Jim Shelton.

The store is located at 1331 Commonwealth Avenue, on the corner of West Dickson Street and Commonwealth.
