Dogs are the recent target of the new flu strain spreading around the Midwest.

Hundreds of dogs have been sickened throughout by the H3N2 strain.

Luckily, all are healthy in Superior.

Symptoms include a cough, runny nose and fever.

Animal health experts say there are other viruses pet owners should be concerned about.

“Like kennel cough is one of our vaccines for the bacterial viruses and is a much more common thing.  They too are not typically not life threatening,” said Veterinarian, Dr. Bob McClellan.

The dog flu is not contagious to humans and pet owners should not be concerned.

“If dogs have symptoms it’s good to isolate them.  If they have symptoms it’s probably good to check them out and maybe not go to a boarding kennel,” Dr. Bob said.

The strain is not related to the bird flu.
