Veterans Restore Defaced Richard I. Bong Memorial

There’s a heart-warming update on the vandalism of a special veteran’s memorial in Poplar.
On Wednesday, we showed you an image of graffiti spray painted on the Richard I. Bong memorial plaque.
But since then, another photo surfaced after a local veteran, who asked to stay unknown, purchased an American flag and covered the memorial out of respect.
And then, another update came our way Thursday with a picture of the memorial fully restored.
The Douglas County Veterans’ Services Office said four veterans – two from Poplar, one from Superior and one from Washburn County – quietly worked on the memorial for two hours to remove the paint before taking that American flag and hoisting it a flag pole nearby.
As for Thursday night, no arrests had been made.
