Many visitors say they struggle to find The Lake Superior Zoo because it is poorly labeled, according to zoo officials.
But that’s about to change.
Plans for a new entrance on Grand Avenue and 72nd Avenue West include adding trees, bushes and a more attention–grabbing sign.
“It’s a little bit of a chore to find the zoo,” admitted Rob Karwath, Spokesman for the Lake Superior Zoo. “We’ve got that big sign out there, but I don’t think a lot of people see us. Just the environment we’re in, we’re tucked in a few blocks back from Grand Avenue, we need to be right off the roadway, but this will let people know officially, ‘Hey we’re at the zoo.’”
This construction is part of a larger multi–million dollar plan to resurface Grand Avenue from I–35 to 82nd Avenue West.
Zoo officials hope the plan will provide residents who live nearby more privacy.
“The zoo’s been tucked in a residential neighborhood for many, many years, and we’ve got great neighbors, we love our neighbors, our neighbors love us. But this will finally give us a little bit of separation from them, and allow the residential neighborhood to be more of a residential neighborhood full time,” said Karwath.
Construction is projected to begin early this summer.
The zoo will be open every day starting May 1, and will remain open for normal hours during construction.
