George Floyd Mural Painted at Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial

DULUTH, Minn. – The Duluth community was given the opportunity to heal outside the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial on Monday through the creation of a mural.

The community painted a mural of a black power sign, as well as ones of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, an African American woman who was shot and killed while sleeping in her home in Louisville.

This begins a week of events to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the wrongful lynching of Elias Clayton, Elmer Jackson and Isaac McGhie. The CJMM had to move some of its events to online due to COVID-19 but wanted this to happen in the wake of Floyd’s death.

“Elias Clayton, Elmer Jackson and Isaac McGhie are reminding us again, 100 years later, of why it’s imporrtat for us to fight for justice and stand for justice. COVID-19 is a pandemic, but racism is a deeper pandemic that we need to face as well,” organizer Daniel Oyinloie said.

A Duluth-based documentary crew was also filming the mural painting, which the CJMM organization will air virtually next week. The group plans to host 10,000 people at the site for the anniversary next summer.
