Ideas Forum on Future of the Iron Range

Panelists offer ideas on engaging the area's youth to working with mining companies.

Finding ways to solve the economic booms and busts of the Iron Range has often brought more questions than answers, but a group of panelists presented their ideas for a sustainable future.

The panelists outlined taking advantage of what the area currently does well, taking care of its resources and its youth through education.

Like many her age, Jessalyn Sabin left home for a bit but returned because she believes in the future of the Iron Range.

“When that talent and ingenuity and skill leaves the workforce that makes our communities less vibrant and that takes away from from our culture and our economic opportunity,” said Sabin.

Minnesota Public Radio hosted Sabin and other panelists on how the range can create a stable, strong economy.

“Let’s focus on what we could become,” said Sabin.

While many communities rely on mining heavily, panelists pointed towards working with the corporations and outlining clearly and concisely rules, regulations, and infrastructure.

“What better place that can do this than the state of Minnesota. We got the right people, the right minds and the we got the resources and the ability to do it,” said panelist Rolf Weberg.

Ideas presented for future generations, but they said the time is now.

“Young people this has to start with you,” said Sabin.
